The real problem with Canva resumes in 2026
Canva has taken over the resume world: in 20 minutes you get a visually flawless document with harmonious colors, professional icons and a modern layout. The catch is that this beautiful resume is often invisible to the ATS software that screens applications before a human reads them.
Among the resumes analyzed by CVpass, many resumes designed in Canva lose a significant part of their content when an ATS extracts them automatically, and their ATS score clearly suffers.
In other words: an excellent candidate with a badly exported Canva resume is often less likely to get a call than an average candidate with a clean Word resume. That isn't a flaw in Canva. It's a basic mismatch between what Canva produces by default and what ATS software can read.
The 3 technical reasons a Canva resume becomes unreadable
1. The image PDF (the most serious case)
When you export a resume from Canva as "PDF Print", or with the "Flatten PDF" option checked, Canva can turn the content (graphic layers, icons, complex fonts) into an image. To you, it looks like text. To an ATS, it's a photo of text, which can't be analyzed without OCR. The "PDF Standard" export keeps the text, but it doesn't fix columns or graphic elements (see points 2 and 3).
The result: no skills detected, no keywords extracted, no sections recognized. The ATS score drops close to zero.
To understand the difference between an image PDF and a text PDF in detail, read our guide on PDF vs. Word: which format gets through ATS better.
2. The multi-column layout
Even when a Canva PDF contains selectable text, a two-column structure sabotages extraction. ATS software reads left to right, line by line. A left column with "Experience" and a right column with "Skills" produces a jumbled read:
*How an ATS reads a 2-column Canva resume*: "Full-Stack Developer JavaScript React, Node.js, Vue Professional Experience Skills 2022-Present..."
Sentences stop making sense. The ATS no longer recognizes the sections. The logic of your resume is lost.
3. Floating text boxes and icons
Canva often places text in separate boxes: one block for your name, another for your contact details, colored shapes with text inside. ATS software doesn't rank these blocks well and may ignore several of them.
Icons (phone, email, LinkedIn, skill bars, rating stars) are purely visual to an ATS: either invisible or read as random characters ("⚡ Experience" becomes "? Experience", which breaks section detection).
Canva templates: which ones work and which to avoid
Here's how ATS software generally reads each type of Canva template:
| Canva template type | How ATS reads it | Use it? |
|---|---|---|
| Single column, black text, minimal | **Well** | Yes |
| Single column with 1 accent color | Well | Yes (safe) |
| Wide colored header + single-column body | Varies | With caution |
| 2 columns (left sidebar) | **Poorly** | No |
| 2 columns with icons | **Very poorly** | No |
| Creative template with circles/hexagons | **Barely at all** | Never |
| Template with a background photo | **Barely at all** | Never |
Simple rule: if the template looks like it can be read like a book (top to bottom, one line after another, no detours), it gets through. If not, it sinks.
How to test your Canva resume in 30 seconds
Test 1: The brute-force copy-paste
1. Open your Canva PDF
2. Select all the text with Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac)
3. Copy it (Ctrl+C)
4. Paste it into a blank document or note
Three possible outcomes:
- Nothing pastes → your resume is an image PDF and the ATS will read nothing.
- The text pastes but out of order → column layout or floating boxes, and the ATS will read jumbled text.
- The text pastes in a logical order → your resume is ATS-compatible.
Test 2: The ATS scan
The copy-paste test is useful but limited. CVpass follows the same steps as an ATS: text extraction, section detection, score calculation. Free for one analysis, no credit card required. If your score is below 40 even though your background is strong, it's almost always a formatting problem.

4 ways to rescue a Canva resume
Fix 1: The right export: "PDF Standard" (not "PDF Print")
This is the simplest and most underrated fix. In Canva:
1. Click "Share" (top right)
2. Click "Download"
3. File type: select "PDF Standard" (not "PDF Print")
4. Uncheck "Flatten PDF" if the option appears
"PDF Print" often produces a high-resolution image PDF (meant for printing). "PDF Standard" keeps the text selectable.
With the same Canva design, the text becomes readable by the ATS again. If your template uses columns, add fix 2 as well: the export alone doesn't put the text back in order.
Fix 2: Switch to a single column
If your template has multiple columns, change templates. Canva has plenty of single-column designs under categories like "Minimalist", "Classic", "Simple" and "Professional".
Look specifically for templates that resemble a Word resume: continuous text, one column, clearly titled sections, no headings inside colored shapes.
Fix 3: Make a backup Word version
If you're set on keeping your Canva design for unsolicited applications (emailed straight to a recruiter, LinkedIn, networking), keep your Canva version for those cases.
But for applications through Indeed, Welcome to the Jungle, APEC (France's executive job agency), LinkedIn Jobs, France Travail (the French public employment service), Jobteaser and any company site running an ATS (Workday, Greenhouse, Taleo, iCIMS, Lever), send a plainer Word version.
The 15-minute method:
1. Download a free Word template from our guide The perfect resume in 2026
2. Copy and paste the content of your Canva resume into the Word file
3. Standardize the formatting (Arial or Calibri, 10-12 pt, no icons)
4. Save it as .docx AND as PDF (export from Word, not from Canva)
You now have two versions: a "visual" Canva one for networking and an "ATS-compatible" Word one for high-volume applications.
Fix 4: Drop Canva for your resume
Honestly, in 2026 the trend is toward plain resumes. Recruiters have seen so many multicolored Canva designs that a well-structured classic Word resume looks more "professional" than a busy design. Canva is still perfect for your portfolio, your visual lookbook or your LinkedIn "About" section, but not for the document an ATS reads.
When Canva makes sense for a resume
Canva still makes sense in 3 specific cases:
- Creative jobs: designer, art director, photographer, architect, where the resume itself shows off your eye
- Direct applications to a known person: you know the recruiter's name, you email them directly, and no ATS is involved
- Networking and events: an extended business card to hand out in person
Even then, go for a text PDF export (not an image) so your resume stays copyable if someone wants to pull your contact details.
FAQ: Canva resumes and ATS
Is Canva banned for job applications?
No. Canva isn't banned; it's just poorly suited by default. With the right template (single column) and the right export ("PDF Standard"), a Canva resume can get through ATS software. But most users pick complex templates without knowing.
My Canva resume worked last year. Why doesn't it work anymore?
ATS software is getting stricter. Large companies update their filters to catch poorly structured resumes. A Canva resume that got through in 2024 may be rejected in 2026 for the same roles.
Can I use progress bars for my skills?
No. Progress bars are purely decorative to an ATS, which can't interpret "bar filled to 80%". List your skills as plain text with an explicit level: "Python (advanced, 5 years)" rather than "Python ████████".
Should I include a photo if I use Canva?
In France: it's up to you (see the perfect resume 2026 guide). In the US/UK/Canada: never. If you include a photo, it should be neutral (plain background, professional attire) and must not cover any text, since some ATS systems analyze the area under the photo.
Does Canva break ATS compatibility on purpose?
No. Canva is optimized for visual impact and web sharing, not for text extraction by HR software. It's a side effect of its design model, not intentional.
Is there an "ATS-safe Canva"?
Canva started offering "ATS-friendly" templates in 2025. Look specifically for that label in the resume category. They're usually clean single-column templates. They work better, but a classic Word file is still safer.
