The *service civique* is a French civic service program: a paid public-interest assignment lasting six to twelve months, at least twenty-four hours a week, open to 16 to 25-year-olds (up to 30 for people with disabilities). Many volunteers leave it at the bottom of their CV, on a single line. That's a shame: for a first job or an *alternance* (a work-study program), it is often the longest and most concrete experience you have. Here is how to present it.
Where to put it on your CV
The CAF (France's family benefits agency) and the Agence du service civique recommend listing it under Professional experience (or "Experience"), not under "Interests." A recruiter or screening software looks for your experience first: if the assignment appears there with a duration and tasks, it gets read as experience.
If you also have summer jobs or an internship, list everything from most recent to oldest, without creating a separate "Volunteering" section that would isolate the service civique.
The four pieces of information to include
According to the Agence du service civique's advice, the assignment should clearly show:
1. The name of the host organisation (nonprofit, local government, public institution);
2. The dates (month and year of start and end);
3. The assignment title, for example "Service civique volunteer, academic support";
4. The main tasks you carried out, in detail.
Going beyond the title is the key point: "Service civique, 8 months" says nothing, while three lines of specific tasks bring the experience to life.
Describing the tasks: a before/after example
Before: "Service civique at nonprofit X, helping students."
After:
Service civique volunteer, nonprofit X (September 2025 to May 2026) - Academic support for 12 middle school students, twice a week - Ran anti-bullying awareness workshops in classrooms - Prepared and staffed a booth at the open house day - Coordinated with a team of 5 employees and volunteers
Then reuse the wording of the target posting: if it asks for "people skills" or "teamwork," your tasks should show it without you having to spell it out.
Which skills to bring forward
A service civique builds technical skills tied to the tasks, but also soft skills: adaptability, autonomy, teamwork, the ability to communicate with varied audiences. The Agence du service civique advises linking them to concrete tasks rather than listing them on their own. Writing "autonomous" proves nothing; "organised three workshops a month on my own" proves it.
The documents to keep
At the end of the assignment, each volunteer receives a service civique certificate and a personal skills review listing the skills developed, according to the CAF. The review helps you prepare for interviews, and you can attach it to your application. Your mentor can also help you write your cover letter.
What recruiters say
According to an Ifop survey from June 2019 cited by the CAF, 64% of recruiters surveyed said a service civique experience could encourage them to hire. The study is already dated, but it matches what we see: commitment and duration reassure an employer, provided they are described precisely.
The most common mistakes
- A line with no substance: the title alone, with no tasks or results.
- Putting it under "Interests," where it goes unnoticed.
- Generic qualities ("motivated, dynamic") with no example.
- A two-column CV with icons, which some software reads poorly.
- Forgetting to tailor it to the posting: the same description for a town hall and for a bank.

FAQ
Should I put my service civique on my CV?
Yes, especially if you are just starting out. It is a six to twelve-month assignment with real tasks and a mentor: it counts as experience, as long as you describe it.
Which section should a service civique go in?
Under "Professional experience," with the host organisation, the dates, the assignment title and its main tasks.
How do I describe a service civique without exaggerating?
List what you actually did, with numbers when you have them (people supported, workshops, events). Don't inflate your role: the interview will focus on those lines.
Does a service civique count as experience for a work-study program?
It can carry weight in an alternance application, because it shows consistency and contact with the public or a team. It doesn't replace an employment contract, but it usefully fills a beginner's CV.
Can I attach my service civique certificate to my application?
Yes. The certificate and the personal skills review given at the end of the assignment can support an application and help you prepare for the interview.
