Why choose a Word template over a Canva CV in 2026
In 2026, most CVs sent to large French companies are first filtered by ATS software before a human reads them. Yet the most popular CV templates (Canva, Figma, creative templates) are poorly designed for these automated filters.
Across the CVs analysed by CVpass, the gap is clear: for the same profile, a well-structured Word CV almost always scores higher than a multi-column Canva CV, often by a wide margin.
The reason is simple: ATS can parse structured text, not images. A good Word template ticks every box: single column, standard fonts, clearly labeled sections, no icons, no colours that break text extraction.
This guide presents 5 free Word templates suited to the ATS used in the French market. Each one is:
- Designed to be read cleanly by ATS (Workday, Taleo, Greenhouse, Lever)
- Editable in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice
- Free, with no sign-up required
- Suited to the French job market (standard French sections, not the US/UK layout)
What a good 2026 Word CV template should include
Before the templates, here are the non-negotiable criteria for an ATS-safe template:
| Criterion | What works | What breaks the ATS |
|---|---|---|
| Number of columns | Just 1 | 2 columns, sidebar |
| Font | Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Geist | Comic Sans, novelty fonts |
| Text size | 10-12 pt | < 9 pt or > 14 pt for body text |
| Coloured header | OK if simple | Solid header with your name inside |
| Section icons | None | 📞 ✉ 🏠 in headings |
| Tables | Avoid, use bullets instead | Nested tables |
| Images | Optional photo only | Decorative images |
| Section headings | Experience / Education / Skills / Languages | "My journey," "My talents" |
| Bullet points | Simple dashes or round bullets | Special icons, stars |
| Colours | 1 accent max (section headings) | Rainbow, colour blocks |
If a template doesn't tick these boxes, it sabotages your CV before a human even reads it. See our complete guide to getting past ATS for details.

5 mistakes to avoid with a Word template
1. Keeping Microsoft Word's default template
The default templates (Word's "Modern" or "Chronological" CVs) use 2 columns and contain icons. ATS software misreads a good part of them. Avoid them.
2. Using Pages (Mac) and then exporting to Word
Pages exports to .docx, but with a lot of conversion that breaks some formatting. Use Google Docs or LibreOffice instead.
3. Putting your contact details in a Word header
Word headers are often ignored by ATS. Put your contact details in the body of the document, not in the header area.
4. Leaving "Lorem ipsum" placeholders in
With downloaded templates, people forget to delete sample text like "Your summary here." It happens more often than you'd think.
5. Not exporting to PDF before sending
A Word .docx gets through some ATS, but a text-based PDF generated from Word gets through all of them. ALWAYS export to PDF before sending (via "File > Save As > PDF").
How to get your personalised template in 2 minutes
The simplest method is to use [CVpass](/): upload your old CV (even a Canva one), the AI automatically restructures the content in an ATS-friendly format, and you download the result in Word or PDF.
The basic analysis is free (no credit card). Paid plans include:
- Unlimited PDF export
- Pro templates (5 layout variations)
- AI rewriting of weak bullet points
- Automatic tailoring to each job posting
The no-tool alternative: use Google Docs (free) with a minimalist template. The "Serif," "Spearmint" and "Swiss" templates in Google Docs are ATS-friendly.
FAQ: Free Word CV template
Can I use a default Microsoft Word template?
Avoid it. Word's default "Modern" and "Chronological" templates use 2 columns and icons that break ATS.
What's the best final format: .docx or .pdf?
A text-based PDF exported from Word. Both get through most ATS, but PDF guarantees the layout won't shift on the recruiter's screen. See PDF or Word: which format performs better.
Can a free template really be ATS-friendly?
Yes, as long as it meets the 10 criteria above (single column, standard fonts, labeled sections, no icons). Being free has nothing to do with ATS quality: a paid template can be just as bad as a free one if it's poorly designed.
Should I put a photo on my Word CV?
In France, it's up to you. No photo = no bias, and that's the 2026 trend. With a photo, make sure it's professional (neutral background, professional attire). For US/UK/Canada applications: never include a photo.
How many pages for a Word CV?
1 page for less than 5 years of experience. 2 pages max beyond that. 3 pages only for academic research or some senior executive profiles.
My template looks great but my ATS score is bad. What should I do?
Test your CV on CVpass. If the score is < 50 for a solid profile, it's almost always a formatting issue (complex layout, icons, columns). Redo your CV in a single column with a plainer template.
Are there paid ATS-friendly Word templates worth buying?
Rarely. ATS quality doesn't depend on price but on structure. A well-designed free template beats a €20 template with 2 columns.
Analyse your current CV against ATS for free: CVpass. In 30 seconds, you'll know whether your Word format (or any other) gets through the filters, and you can apply the AI rewriting suggestions in 1 click.
