Cashier jobs are hiring heavily: France Travail (France's public employment service) counts 37,100 postings filed over 12 months for this job family (job profile D1505, Data emploi). Recruiters therefore receive many CVs, often very similar. To stand out, you need to make visible your reliability, your customer contact and your experience with the pressure of rush hours. Here is how.
A headline and summary that echo the posting
At the top, put the exact title from the posting: "Hôte de caisse," "Caissier(ère)" or "Employé(e) polyvalent(e) caisse et libre-service" (cashier and self-service associate). That way, screening software and recruiters spot the position at a glance.
Add a two-line summary, for example: "Cashier with 3 years of supermarket experience, at ease during rush hours and with cash register management. Available on weekends." No generic phrase like "motivated and dynamic": a setting, a duration, an availability.
The duties to describe
According to the France Travail job profile, a cashier welcomes and directs customers, rings up purchases, handles payment and manages the register, controls the flow at the checkout to limit waiting, informs customers about promotions and makes sure payment and security procedures are followed. They may also handle returns and complaints. The Onisep (France's official career information agency) adds restocking shelves and price labeling during quiet periods.
Use the ones you actually did, with a number when you know it:
- "Checked out 150 to 200 customers per day, cash, card and check payments" (replace with your real order of magnitude).
- "Closed and reconciled the register at the end of each shift, with no recurring discrepancies."
- "Handled complaints and returns when the manager was away."
- "Restocked shelves and labeled products between customers."
Useful skills
What the Onisep highlights: composure under pressure and patience, diplomacy with an unhappy customer, a neat appearance, honesty, rigor and focus, vigilance about items in shopping carts. On the technical side: barcode scanner or handheld scanner, payment terminal, supervising self-checkout machines, point-of-sale software.
Group them into two blocks: "Register" (checkout, giving change, price checks, closing) and "Customer service" (greeting, managing wait times, complaints). You can also list the languages you speak if your store has tourist customers.
Entry-level, with no cashier experience
The job is open without a required degree: the Onisep lists an entry level of CAP or equivalent (a French vocational certificate), with the CAP équipier polyvalent du commerce (retail associate) as the reference training, and notes that most hiring is done from that level. With no experience, highlight:
- a summer job, a student job, an internship in a store or fast-food restaurant;
- volunteer work involving handling money (school fair, nonprofit);
- training in progress (CAP, professional title employé commercial);
- your availability: weekends, evenings, public holidays, because large stores hire a lot of part-time staff according to the Onisep.
Our guide to the CV with no experience details the method, and the one on the first CV suits younger candidates.
Layout: one clear page
One page is enough. A readable font, simple subheadings, one experience per block, most recent dates first. Avoid columns, icons and tables, which some screening software reads poorly: see why format matters. A photo is optional, see photo on a CV.
Moving up: head cashier and beyond
The Onisep mentions progression to assistant head cashier or head cashier after a few years, managing several registers and teams. If you are aiming for this, mention on your CV training new colleagues, opening or closing the store, or handling an incident. For a retail sales associate position, the same duties apply with advisory selling on top.
