The engineer CV: technical precision vs. ATS
Engineering roles are among the most heavily filtered by ATS platforms. Recruiters configure very technical keywords: CAD software, industry standards, certifications, embedded programming languages. A generic engineer CV will rarely get through. For an overview by profile, see our ATS CV guide by industry.
"Engineer" isn't enough: specify your field
The title "engineer" on its own is too generic for an ATS, which filters on a specialty and its tools. Depending on your field, the expected keywords are completely different:
- Mechanical / design: CAD (CATIA, SolidWorks), structural analysis (ANSYS), industrialization, tolerancing.
- Civil engineering / construction: structures, reinforced concrete, Revit, AutoCAD, Eurocode standards, site supervision.
- Embedded systems / electronics: C/C++, microcontrollers, real-time, VHDL, protocols (CAN, I2C).
- R&D / process: design of experiments, prototyping, patents, industry regulations.
- Quality / methods: Lean, Six Sigma, FMEA, ISO 9001, continuous improvement.
Use the exact job title from the posting (for example "Manufacturing Methods Engineer" rather than "Engineer") and move the tools named in the posting to the top of your skills.
Structure of an ATS-friendly engineer CV
Technical summary
"Mechanical Engineer with 5 years of experience in product design and industrialization. Expertise in CAD (CATIA V5, SolidWorks), structural analysis (ANSYS) and industrial project management. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified."
Education first
For engineers, education is often an ATS screening criterion:
- Exact name of the school (INSA, Centrale, Arts et Métiers, Polytech...)
- Specialisation
- Graduation year
Technical skills by category
- CAD/CAM: CATIA V5/V6, SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD, Inventor
- Simulation: ANSYS, Abaqus, COMSOL, Matlab/Simulink
- Standards: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, IATF 16949, EN 9100
- Methods: Lean, Six Sigma, FMEA (AMDEC), 5S, Kaizen, PDCA
- Tools: SAP, Windchill, TeamCenter, JIRA
Project-focused experience
Good example: "Designed and industrialized an engine subassembly (CATIA V5), reducing weight by 15% while meeting IATF 16949 standards. Coordinated 3 suppliers, delivered on time and on budget (€250K)."
Engineer keywords for ATS
- Design: CAD, CAM, PLM, prototyping, design review, functional dimensioning
- Production: industrialization, process, routing, production line, yield
- Quality: ISO 9001, FMEA, quality control, non-conformance, internal audit
- Management: technical project management, supplier coordination, requirements specification
- Certifications: Green Belt, Black Belt, PMP, industry-specific certifications
Common engineer CV mistakes
Listing software without context. "CATIA V5" on its own isn't enough. In what context? For what kind of parts? With what result?
Forgetting standards. ISO, IATF, EN: ATS platforms at large industrial groups filter on them systematically.
Not mentioning your school. In France, the engineering school (école d'ingénieur) is a major screening criterion. Make sure it's clearly visible.
What CVpass does for engineers
CVpass analyses your engineer CV against the posting and identifies missing software, standards and certifications. The AI rewrites your experience with the technical keywords recruiters expect.
