Key takeaways

HR professionals know ATS inside out, yet their own CVs often suffer. The key: target your specialty (recruiting, payroll, HRIS, employment law, HRBP), use the exact job title from the posting, and quantify your activity (number of hires, headcount managed, payroll volume).

No need to read it all: test your CV in 30 seconds. Free ATS score, no sign-up.

The HR CV vs. ATS: the irony of the recruiter being recruited

HR professionals know ATS platforms better than anyone, since they use them every day. Yet when they're job hunting themselves, their CVs often have the same problems as the ones they reject: vague wording, missing keywords, a suboptimal structure. For an overview by profile, see our ATS CV guide by industry.

HR generalist or specialist? Target the right function

HR covers very different jobs, and an ATS calibrated for one won't recognise the other. Identify your function and its keywords:

  • Recruiting / Talent Acquisition: sourcing, headhunting, structured interviews, employer branding, ATS (Workday, Greenhouse).
  • Payroll & ADP: payroll management, DSN (France's monthly payroll filing), HRIS (Silae, ADP), social charges, final pay settlements.
  • HRBP / generalist: employee relations, career management, annual reviews, manager coaching.
  • Employment law: contracts, terminations, labour court litigation, legal monitoring, CSE (works council).
  • HRIS / People Ops: tool configuration, HR reporting, KPIs, process automation.

An "HR generalist" CV targeting a payroll specialist role will rank poorly if it doesn't include DSN, HRIS and payroll vocabulary. Align your title and skills with the job description.

Structure of an ATS-friendly HR CV

Profile summary

"Recruiter with 5 years of experience in IT and sales recruiting. 200+ hires completed, from defining the need to onboarding. Expertise in sourcing, structured interviews and employer branding. Tools: Workday, LinkedIn Recruiter, Greenhouse."

Experience with HR metrics

  • Hiring volume: number of positions filled per year
  • Time-to-hire: average hiring time
  • Retention rate: at 6 months, 1 year
  • Training budget: amount managed
  • Headcount managed: number of employees

Good example: "Hired 45 tech and sales profiles in 12 months (average time-to-hire: 28 days). Launched an onboarding program that cut first-year turnover by 25%."

HR keywords for ATS

  • Recruiting: sourcing, executive search, structured interview, assessment, ATS, job board, employee referral
  • Administration: payroll, DPAE (pre-hire declaration), employment contracts, DSN, health insurance, benefits plans
  • Employment law: collective bargaining agreement, CSE, NAO (annual mandatory negotiations), rupture conventionnelle (mutual termination), dismissal
  • Training: skills development plan, OPCO, CPF, skills assessment
  • Tools: Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Talentsoft, PayFit, Silae, LinkedIn Recruiter, Greenhouse
  • Concepts: employer branding, QVT/QVCT (workplace well-being), CSR, diversity and inclusion, GPEC/GEPP (strategic workforce planning)

Common HR CV mistakes

Generic duties. "Human resources management" says nothing. Be specific: recruiting, payroll, training, employee relations?

Forgetting volume. How many hires? What headcount? What training budget?

No mention of HRIS tools. ATS platforms filter on Workday, SAP, PayFit. If you use them, mention them.
